ECO-SOLUTIONS: – This model offers five (5) distinct solutions aimed at tackling environmental challenges and promoting energy efficiency and conservation in schools.

1. ECO-SANITATION – under the eco-sanitation model, we work through school health and civic education clubs at the pre-tertiary level to drive education on sanitation – educating students on sanitation, its benefits, and empowering them to be sanitation champions:

a. Club sanitation sessions – we use interactive methods like role-playing, group discussions, and Q&A sessions at club meetings to drive sanitation education focusing on the basics of sanitation practices, disease prevention, and the environmental impact of poor sanitation.

b. Hands-on Eco-Sanitation Projects – this approach engages the innovative abilities of students in creating eco-friendly sanitation innovative solutions through competitions – with associated rewards.

a. Awareness campaigns and competitions – as part of the eco- sanitation projects, ZiSFoD organises school-wide events, such as poster competitions, debates, and sanitation awareness campaigns, to engage students on sanitation topics.

c. Peer Educators – we identify and train students as sanitation ambassadors who lead by example and educate their peers on best sanitation practices – promoting good sanitation practices within the school community and by extension in their homes and communities.

  1. Recognition and reward programme – we recognise and reward students who actively participate in sanitation projects or excel as peer educators. Rewards comprise certificates, eco-friendly prizes, tech gadgets etc.
  2. Waste segregation – we also assist schools by educating students on the importance of waste segregation, supplying bins, and occasionally supporting students to craft bins from recycled materials.

2. ECO-HYGIENE – under the eco-hygiene model, we also work through school health and civic education clubs at the pre-tertiary level to drive education on hygiene practices – educating students on handwashing, its benefits, and empowering them to be hygiene champions. Through this model, we consciously inculcate eco-friendly hygiene habits in students for life – helping both to improve personal health and to protect the environment.

  1. Eco-friendly handwashing stations – under this initiative, we assist schools to set up simple handwashing stations using either ‘water- saving taps’, ‘veronica buckets2’, foot-pedal systems (tippy-taps) etc. We also support schools to innovate sustainable ways of supplying soap for students.
  2. Regular hygiene education sessions – we also work with school leaders in organising brief interactive sessions with students (club meetings, morning assembly sessions etc.) on proper handwashing, oral hygiene, personal cleanliness, and menstrual health. The sessions comprise engaging students with games, role-playing, and hands-on activities to reinforce learning.
  3. Hygiene Peer Educators – we also identify and train students to serve as hygiene ambassadors, leading awareness sessions, helping with monitoring, and sharing hygiene tips with their peers.
